This Koh Lipe rainy season guide is based on our own experience spending multiple weeks on the island during low season in 2025 and 2026. We wanted to understand whether the Koh Lipe rainy season is really as challenging as many travel guides suggest, as the Koh Lipe rainy season often gets a bad reputation, but after spending multiple weeks on the island we discovered a very different reality.
Empty beaches. Quiet dive sites. Crystal-clear water. Sudden tropical downpours. After spending a week on Koh Lipe during the rainy season, we discovered that the reality is very different from what most travel guides suggest.
Many travellers immediately cross Koh Lipe off their list once they realise they’re visiting during Thailand’s monsoon season.
We almost did the same.
Like many people planning a trip to southern Thailand, we worried about cancelled boat trips, grey skies and spending our holiday trapped indoors waiting for the rain to stop.
Instead, we found some of the quietest beaches we’ve experienced anywhere in Thailand, surprisingly good diving conditions and a much more relaxed version of the island than the one most people see during peak season.

What Is Koh Lipe Like During Rainy Season?
The first thing that surprised us was how quiet the island felt.
When we arrived, there were very few passengers on our ferry and the island immediately felt relaxed compared to many of Thailand’s more popular destinations.
Accommodation was plentiful.
Many restaurants had available tables.
Entire stretches of beach felt almost deserted.
Considering Koh Lipe can become extremely busy during the peak season months, this was one of the biggest advantages of visiting during the rainy season.
We had heard stories of accommodation selling out, crowded beaches and packed dive boats.
Instead, we experienced a peaceful tropical island that felt far removed from the crowds often associated with Thailand’s most popular destinations.
Koh Lipe Rainy Season: When Does It Start?
Many travellers researching the Koh Lipe rainy season expect constant storms and cancelled activities. While weather can be unpredictable, our experience was far more positive than we expected.

Koh Lipe’s rainy season generally runs from May through October.
However, not all months are equal.
Based on our experience and conversations with locals, May and June often provide a good balance between fewer crowds and relatively stable weather during Koh Lipe’s rainy season.
July through September tend to bring more consistent rainfall, stronger winds and rougher sea conditions.
One thing we quickly learned is that weather forecasts are not particularly reliable on small tropical islands.
On several occasions, we woke up to forecasts predicting thunderstorms, heavy rain and lightning throughout the day.
Instead, we found blue skies, calm seas and beautiful beach conditions.
Equally, we also experienced afternoons that transformed from perfect sunshine into dramatic tropical downpours within minutes.
Flexibility is essential.
Is June A Good Time To Visit Koh Lipe?
June is often considered one of the transition months between Koh Lipe’s peak tourist season and the wetter monsoon months that typically arrive later in the year. After spending a week on the island in June, we’d happily return during the same period.
Before arriving, we expected frequent rain, rough seas and a fairly limited island experience. Instead, we found long periods of sunshine, calm water on many days and significantly fewer visitors than Koh Lipe receives during the high season.
That doesn’t mean you’ll experience perfect weather every day. During our visit, weather forecasts regularly predicted thunderstorms and heavy rain, yet many mornings started with calm seas and beautiful sunrises. We also experienced afternoons where the weather changed rapidly, transforming from blue skies into dramatic tropical downpours within minutes.
The biggest advantage of visiting in June is the balance. The island feels noticeably quieter, accommodation is easier to book and many activities continue to operate normally. Dive boats were far less crowded than we expected and some beaches felt almost deserted at times.
If your priority is guaranteed sunshine every day, you may prefer visiting during the peak season months. However, if you’re willing to accept a little unpredictability in exchange for fewer crowds, lower prices and a more relaxed atmosphere, June may be one of the most underrated times to visit Koh Lipe.

The Biggest Advantages Of Visiting Koh Lipe During Rainy Season
1. Significantly Fewer Crowds
This was by far our favourite part of visiting during low season.
Many beaches felt almost empty.
Popular viewpoints were peaceful.
Boat trips were quieter.
Some dive sites felt like private charters.
For us, this completely changed the atmosphere of the island.
Instead of competing for space, we felt like we were experiencing a quieter and more authentic version of Koh Lipe.
2. Easier Accommodation Availability
One of the biggest advantages of travelling during the rainy season is flexibility.
Accommodation is much easier to find.
Last-minute bookings are generally less stressful.
You also have a greater chance of securing beachfront accommodation that might be unavailable during peak season.
3. Lower Prices
Although not every hotel dramatically reduces rates, many accommodations offer significantly lower prices than during peak season.
Some scuba diving resorts, like Castaway, will even include free accommodation for every day you dive with them.
The same often applies to transport and selected activities.
For budget-conscious travellers and serious divers, rainy season can offer excellent value.
4. Beautiful Beaches
Many people assume rainy season means grey skies all day.
That simply wasn’t our experience.
Some of our favourite memories involved walking almost-empty beaches under dramatic tropical skies, and some of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen (and we’ve seen a lot of sunsets!)
The combination of turquoise water, moody clouds and very few people often created even more spectacular scenery than a typical cloudless day.
5. Kayaking To Nearby Islands
One of our favourite experiences was renting a kayak and paddling to one of the small islands just offshore.
For a relatively small cost, you can find yourself surrounded by crystal-clear water with very few other people around. Bring a snorkel and some fins with you and you have your own budget friendly adventure!

The Downsides You Should Know About
Koh Lipe rainy season isn’t perfect.
There are some trade-offs.
Weather Can Change Quickly
One moment you’ll be enjoying sunshine.
The next, you’ll be sheltering under a beach umbrella while a tropical storm passes through.
This unpredictability is simply part of island life during the monsoon season.
We largely didn’t experience bad weather for very long periods of time.
But the wetter weather and humidity of Koh Lipe’s rainy season can bring some extra large mosquitos which can be fended off with some long sleeves and repellent.
Boat Trips Can Be Cancelled
During the later months of Koh Lipe rainy season the conditions become rough, operators may cancel:
- Snorkelling trips
- Diving trips
- Ferry transfers
This doesn’t happen every day, but it’s important to remain flexible. That’s why we recommend visiting Koh Lipe during the shoulder season months of May-June and end of October -November, avoiding the more turbulent months of July-September where Koh Lipe rainy season really kicks into full throttle!
If you’re travelling on a tight schedule, consider allowing extra buffer days around flights and major travel connections.
Sea Conditions Can Become Rough
During periods of stronger wind, crossings from Hat Yai can become significantly bumpier. Whilst access from the nearby Malaysian Island of Langkawi is completely unavailable between June-Mid-October.
If you’re prone to seasickness, we recommend packing motion sickness medication just in case.
Additionally, you might get wet on the speedboat depending on how well the awnings have been pulled down.. And your bag might get wet too.. It’s the risk you run! If you want to be prepared, bring a rain mac and a sense of adventure!
High Tides Can Change The Beaches
One thing we quickly noticed is that rainy season often brings larger tidal fluctuations.
At high tide, parts of Sunrise Beach can almost disappear as the water reaches right up to the resorts.
This isn’t necessarily a negative, but it does mean timing beach walks and access points around the tides.
Sometimes island life simply means getting your feet wet.
These high tides can also make the island look less ‘instagrammable’, revealing plastic sandbags and washing large amounts of plastic up onto the beach, a reality we rarely, if ever, manage to avoid on any island trip these days.

Absolutely.
In fact, this was one of the main reasons we visited Koh Lipe during low season.
While parts of Tarutao National Marine Park close seasonally to allow reefs to recover, many of Koh Lipe’s most famous dive sites remain accessible.
Visibility can vary depending on weather conditions, but we still experienced excellent diving during our visit.
The biggest benefit?
Fewer divers.
Quieter boats.
Less crowded dive sites.

How To Travel More Responsibly In Koh Lipe
One of the most noticeable aspects of our visit was the amount of ocean plastic washing ashore after periods of rough weather.
Locals we spoke to explained that this has become an increasing challenge over the years.
Koh Lipe is a small island with limited infrastructure and waste management challenges common throughout many tropical island destinations.
As visitors, there are simple things we can do to help.
Bring Reusable Shopping Bags
Many shops automatically provide plastic bags.
A reusable bag quickly reduces unnecessary waste.
Carry A Reusable Water Bottle
Reducing single-use plastics makes a meaningful difference on small islands. Castaway has a water bottle refill station, you will find them at many of the eco-friendly resorts, including Hide Resort.
Refuse Plastic Straws
Many drinks are still routinely served with disposable straws.
Wear Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Traditional sunscreens can contribute to reef damage.
Choosing reef-safe alternatives helps reduce environmental impact.
Consider Wearing A Rash Guard
A rash guard provides excellent sun protection while reducing the amount of sunscreen required.
Never Stand On Coral
This is particularly important during low tide.
Some reef areas become very shallow and coral can be easily damaged by accidental contact.
Many coral species take years to grow.
No coral means no reef.
No reef means no habitat for fish and marine life.
Where We Would Stay In Koh Lipe During Rainy Season
After two separate stays on Koh Lipe, we’d happily choose Sunrise Beach again for a rainy season visit.
While many visitors naturally gravitate towards Pattaya Beach and Walking Street, we found ourselves spending most of our time on the quieter eastern side of the island. Sunrise Beach offers direct access to the sea, beautiful morning views and an easy walk to North Point Beach, which we believe is the best sunset location on Koh Lipe.
Rainy season also brings some practical advantages to staying here. Heavy showers can quickly turn some of the island’s interior roads muddy and slippery, while higher tides can occasionally make certain routes less convenient. Staying on Sunrise Beach allows you to embrace the tropical island lifestyle without constantly needing to cut through the centre of the island.
Many days you can move between your accommodation, the beach, snorkelling spots, dive centre, restaurants and sunset viewpoints entirely on foot.
That doesn’t mean you’re isolated from the rest of the island. If you want to visit Pattaya Beach, explore Walking Street or head out for dinner elsewhere, local taxi services are readily available and surprisingly affordable. During our visit, the standard fare was around 50 THB per person anywhere on the island, making it easy to explore without needing to stay in the busiest areas.
In practice, we rarely needed to use taxis because most of what we enjoyed about Koh Lipe was already on our doorstep. But it was nice knowing the option was there whenever we wanted to explore further.

Start Planning Your Getaway at Castaway Resort, Koh Lipe
This was our second stay with Castaway Resort and we were just as impressed as we were the first time. The resort strikes a balance between comfort, location and sustainability that feels perfectly suited to the island.
The rooms were consistently clean, the beachfront location is fantastic and the restaurant became one of our regular spots throughout the trip. The food was excellent, and their happy hour cocktails are particularly good. We found the perfect routine was grabbing a cocktail during happy hour before taking the short walk to North Point Beach to watch the sunset.
One thing we particularly like about Castaway is the value it offers divers. During low season, divers booking with Castaway Dive Centre can often take advantage of promotions that include accommodation and a freshly cooked lunch from the restaurant each day they dive. Considering you’re staying directly on one of Koh Lipe’s most beautiful beaches while having excellent diving and snorkelling on your doorstep, it’s a compelling package.
Whether you’re learning to dive, completing an Open Water course, interested in macro photography or simply looking for a quieter diving experience away from peak season crowds, we think Castaway is one of the strongest options on the island.

Snorkelling Around Sunrise Beach: What You Should Know
Many older Koh Lipe travel guides still recommend Sunrise Beach as one of the island’s best shore snorkelling locations.
While there is still coral and marine life accessible from the beach, we found that conditions have changed somewhat over the years.
The increasing number of longtail boats operating from Sunrise Beach means that some areas are no longer as relaxing or as suitable for independent snorkelling as they once were. Boats frequently transport divers, snorkellers and visitors around the island throughout the day, often manoeuvring surprisingly close to shore.
If you’re planning to snorkel independently, we’d recommend walking towards North Point Beach where boat traffic is generally lighter and entry points feel more relaxed.
If you do choose to snorkel from Sunrise Beach, consider using a surface marker buoy so boat operators can see you more easily.
Low tide brings another important consideration. Many reef areas become extremely shallow and coral can be easily damaged by accidental contact. Be especially careful where you place your feet when entering or exiting the water.
A single misplaced step can destroy coral that may have taken years to grow.
No coral means no reef.
No reef means no habitat for fish and marine life.
If possible, wear a rash guard for sun protection and use reef-safe sunscreen to minimise your impact on the marine environment.
